Aloha is How Letarte Greets the World
From a single swimsuit in Maui to the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Hawaiian authenticity, exclusivity and loyal worldwide customers helped propel this ‘Beach to Street’ tropical luxe clothing from a single swimsuit in a Maui beach bungalow to the cover of the one and only Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
The Letarte sisters have made it to the top — big time! In the founding year 2000 they attended and debuted a small collection of swimwear and coordinating cover-ups at the annual International Trade Show held in Miami, Florida. Today, fourteen years later, their Bohemian island essence – chic global style apparel is known around the world, as their now multi-million dollar company continues to grow.
With signature trademark prints, intricate adornments and lavish detail, Letarte-wear has loyal clients including Kate Hudson, Beyonce Knowles, and Cindy Crawford, has had over 50 swimsuits grace the pages of the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Magazine, and boasts two exclusive front covers (2005 and 2013).
It all began when competitive, sponsored Windsurfer, Maui resident and Letarte Designer, Lisa Letarte Cabrinha, could only find swimwear that was ‘sporty.' She wanted something that was ‘a little sexier, a little more flirty but functional’ – so she began designing her own swimwear line with the help of a local seamstress and the enlistment of her entrepreneurial sister, Michele Letarte, who is a resident of Fairfield and is now Letarte's President.
The dynamic duo run 7 retail shops; the first opened in 2008 in Maui, then came Nantucket, Greenwich Avenue, Worth Avenue Palm Beach, Madison Avenue NY, Malibu and Newport Beach California.
Most recently, Letarte was awarded with both the front and the back cover of an anniversary edition book entitled ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit: 50 Years of Beautiful.' The one and only of its kind, this swimsuit worn by super-model Heidi Klum, on these covers was created and designed by Lisa Letarte Cabrinha, exclusively for this feature. “It’s a real honor to be in Sports Illustrated,” said Michele. “They’re the best, the one you aspire to and hope to get into.”
“Our goal for the brand is that it is a lifestyle brand, not only for the beach, but for the mountains too,” said Michele as she explained their broadened line: from tunics, to cashmere, to fur, to suede, to swimwear! Also: sportswear, beach accessories, after sun skincare, and more.
