From the Editor: Fresh Start

If your workout needs a shot of energy, look no further. Coach Ben Kelly on the cover is devoted to health and fitness—and his story will rouse your inner athlete, whether you’re gentle and introverted, competitive and self-motivated, or powerful and gregarious.

For this feature, “Fit to Be Tried,” Fairfield Living magazine talked to a number of Fairfield fitness buffs and businesses. They offer plenty of creative ideas for getting fit, some free, others just irresistibly cool. It doesn’t matter if you respond to solo escapes or to team sports, you’ll find something that gets you going—and having so much fun, you might not even think of it as a workout.

Catching our athletes’ enthusiasm, I signed up for yoga at a local studio. I haven’t tried it before. Deep breathing, holding stretches, arms and legs bending every which way? Having developed as a runner and later a rower, I worried my mind-set wouldn’t support being graceful. But when I saw yoga instructor Lea Cervone raise her arms and flow into a pose…well, it was like watching a flower open to the sun. And I wanted to do that, too.

Imagine yourself trying a new type of fitness, regardless of how you’ve labeled yourself. Fresh approaches are essential to vitality! It’s what keeps this town vibrant—and it will work for you, too.

Because fitness is a health issue, we also check in with the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center in Fairfield. It now offers pilates, yoga, guided meditation and acupuncture (which Creative Director Amy Vischio did for the first time—see “Try It” on page 39).

We also include our Top Doctors in Fairfield County feature (starting on page 75). If you or someone you love needs medical help, this resource will make it easier to find the best available professional. Please—keep this issue as a reference.

I hope you start this year with optimism and energy. Look at where you live, and all it has to offer, withnew eyes. Explore. Try something new.

Happy and healthy New Year!
