From the Editor: Cheers
Are you ready for the upcoming holiday season? Have you started unpacking all your best china and wiping down the silverware, ready to display a spectacular dining table, brimming with homemade delicacies? Or maybe you’re scribbling down mad lists to keep up with all the demands of each formal gathering? Ah, the holidays. Love ’em or loathe ’em, they are coming.
For this issue, the editors and writers talked for a long time about what stories we could do to help our readers during the calendar-packed “silly season.” Ultimately, we turned to local pros for guidance. In our feature “Holiday Break”, you’ll meet four Fairfielders who will not only walk you through the entertaining maze, but, with their enthusiasm and humor, also remind you that it can be fun. Whether you love icing every sugar cookie by hand or prefer to make a reservation at one of our town’s great restaurants, our experts have tips you’ll love.
How else to sidestep stress during the holidays? Get out there and enjoy them! Fairfield offers a holiday shopping stroll, a house tour, seasonal concerts from classical to rock, a whole festival dedicated to house decorating, a traditional tree-lighting ceremony, a model train exhibit worthy of Santa’s workshop and a string of charitable events that dangles from one end of town to the other as prettily as tree lights.
Glum moods be dashed, because this issue is determined to make you raise your spirits. Enjoy hearing about the good guy winning? Turn to “Light a Fire”. We chose that title because the stories of these locals will spark a flame in others to also do good. From a lifetime dedicated to empowering the most vulnerable among us to a newcomer’s drive to inspire youth volunteering, you’ll meet page after page of people who never give up the fight to do the right thing. As one of them puts it, “Giving gives meaning to life.” A simple statement that says so much.
We also have a fun look at the fashion spotted on the local social scene. “Social Style” is another way to acknowledge that the nonprofit directors, committee chairs, event attendees and everyone who supports fundraisers are making a difference. The fruit of the gala is the decorations, music, food and fashion, which in turn strengthens the root of the event: philanthropy. A successful event, year after year, builds support for nonprofits doing work day after day.
Embrace the upcoming season, knowing it celebrates family, gratitude and giving, which are hallmarks of this town year round.
