Fourth grade student Skylar Wingate was inspired to help children in the Operation Hope of Fairfield's homeless shelter.

Operation Hope offers lunch, dinner, shelter for men, women and families, supportive affordable housing, and counseling programs to those in need.

Skylar is part of a Gifted Program at Burr Elementary School. She was inspired when her teacher, Mr. Henkel, suggested the idea of helping others. "He helped me find my perfect topic, which was ‘Pennies for Popsicles,'” said Skylar.  She then approached her school Principal, Mr. Bluestein, who allowed her to make a school wide announcement over the P.A. system.

Skylar explained her intentions addressing both students and staff explaining she would be collecting donations of ‘spare change’ in a collection jug in the school’s Main Lobby throughout the week and would then in turn be donating these proceeds to Operation Hope. “Everyone at Burr School participated by bringing in a couple cents and putting it into the jug. In one week, my project was complete."

After counting and rolling the donated ‘spare change,' the total tallied exceeded their expectations. The change amounted to $38.02. “My project was a success. I brought the money to Operation Hope’s office on the Old Post Road and even got to meet the Executive Director. I was filled with joy because I was helping people in need."
