Dogwood Festival, Mother’s Day and treats from the bake shop Sweet & Simple in Greenfield Hill, where owner Michelle Jaffee sweetens up any day

Sweet & Simple

Michelle Jaffe’s Sweet & Simple bakery opened in the Greenfield Hill Shopping Center in Fairfield just a year ago, but since 2009 she had been baking her home-recipe cookies, cakes, muffins, buns and cupcakes in the Bronson Road Colonial she shares with her husband and three children and delivering them to friends and select stores around Fairfield County and in Manhattan. And before that, she baked with her mother and grandmother on a wood-burning stove in a cabin in Big Sur on the California coast. Now, two full-time employees and six part-time local high schoolers help her fill orders of the natural, wholesome, fresh-baked goods for stores throughout Connecticut and online nationwide.

For this spring’s Dogwood Festival, Michelle will be baking cupcakes decorated with sugar fondant (edible icing) flowers and dogwood-shaped cookies.

For Mother’s Day, customers can order flower-shaped cookies personalized with “Best Mom Ever!” or other messages, along with gift baskets packed with local honey and jams. And for summer, look for cookies adorned with anchors, lighthouses, whales, lobsters and other nautical themes.
